This verse is a powerful reminder that excuses can quietly keep us away from what God is inviting us into. Sometimes God opens a door, gives us an opportunity, places a dream in our hearts, or calls us into a new season, but fear answers before faith does.
We say, “I am not ready.” We say, “I have failed before.” We say, “I am too old.” We say, “I do not have enough support.” We say, “Maybe this is not for me.”
But many times, behind our excuses is fear. Fear of failure. Fear of rejection. Fear of starting again. Fear of being seen. Fear of being disappointed one more time.
Yet God does not call us because we are perfect. He calls us because He has a purpose for our lives, and He is able to strengthen us for what He has assigned to us.
Moses Tried to Run From His Calling
One of the most encouraging stories in the Bible about excuses is the story of Moses.
In **Exodus 3:10**, God said to Moses, “So now, go. I am sending you to Pharaoh to bring my people the Israelites out of Egypt.”
That was a great calling. God wanted to use Moses to deliver the Israelites from slavery. But Moses did not immediately respond with confidence. He responded with fear, doubt, and excuses.
In **Exodus 3:11**, Moses said, “Who am I that I should go to Pharaoh and bring the Israelites out of Egypt?”
Moses looked at himself and felt unqualified. He remembered his past. He saw his weaknesses. He knew he was not powerful in his own strength. He probably wondered why God would choose someone like him.
But God answered him in **Exodus 3:12** and said, “I will be with you.”
That was the real answer Moses needed. God did not say, “Moses, you are strong enough on your own.” God said, “I will be with you.”
Still, Moses continued to struggle. He asked what he should say if the people questioned him. He worried they would not believe him. He said he was not eloquent. He even asked God to send someone else.
In **Exodus 4:10**, Moses said, “Pardon your servant, Lord. I have never been eloquent… I am slow of speech and tongue.”
But God answered in **Exodus 4:12**, “Now go; I will help you speak and will teach you what to say.”
This is where hope enters the story. God already knew Moses’ weakness before He called him. God knew Moses was afraid. God knew Moses felt inadequate. God knew Moses would struggle with confidence. Yet God still chose him.
Moses’ weakness did not cancel God’s purpose.
His fear did not cancel God’s plan.
His past did not disqualify him.
And the same is true for you.
You may feel weak, unprepared, discouraged, or delayed, but God is not finished with your life. He is not asking you to do everything in your own strength. He is asking you to trust Him one step at a time.
Today’s Word: Stop Letting Excuses Hold You Back
Dear child of God, sometimes life wounds us deeply.
You may have gone through disappointment that made you stop expecting good things. You may have faced rejection that made you question your worth. You may have experienced failure that made you afraid to try again. You may have been betrayed, ignored, overlooked, or misunderstood.
After going through enough pain, excuses can begin to feel like protection.
“I will not try again because I do not want to fail again.” “I will not hope again because I do not want to be disappointed again.” “I will not apply again because I was rejected before.” “I will not love again because I was hurt before.” “I will not dream again because life has been too hard.”
But the truth is this: excuses may protect you from temporary discomfort, but they can also keep you trapped in a place God never intended for you to remain.
God understands your pain, but He does not want your pain to become your prison.
He understands your fear, but He does not want fear to become the voice that leads your life.
He knows what happened to you, but He also knows what He placed inside you.
There is still purpose in you. There is still strength in you. There is still hope for you. There is still a future ahead of you.
The enemy wants you to believe that your story is over, but God says your story is still being written.
You may have been delayed, but delay is not denial. You may have fallen, but falling does not mean you are finished. You may have lost opportunities, but God can open new doors. You may have made mistakes, but grace is still available.
**Isaiah 43:18-19** says, “Forget the former things; do not dwell on the past. See, I am doing a new thing!”
God is able to do a new thing in your life, even after disappointment. He is able to restore what was broken. He is able to rebuild what collapsed. He is able to revive the dream you thought had died.
Do not allow one painful season to define your whole life.
Maybe This Sounds Like You
Maybe today you are tired emotionally. You have been trying to stay strong, but deep inside you feel drained. You smile around people, but when you are alone, you wonder why life has been so heavy.
You may have watched others move forward while you feel stuck in the same place. You may have prayed for doors to open, but nothing seems to be changing. You may have tried your best, but still faced rejection. You may have carried responsibilities for your family while silently fighting your own battles.
Some days, you feel hopeful. Other days, you wonder if your efforts even matter.
You may have told yourself, “Maybe I am not good enough.” “Maybe it is too late for me.” “Maybe I missed my chance.” “Maybe God has forgotten me.”
But today, God wants to remind you that your current situation is not your final destination.
This season may be hard, but it is not the end of your story.
You are still growing. You are still healing. You are still learning. You are still becoming.
Sometimes God uses waiting seasons to build strength in us. Sometimes closed doors protect us from what we cannot see. Sometimes disappointment redirects us to something better. Sometimes the delay is not punishment; it is preparation.
Do not despise small beginnings. Do not underestimate one step of faith. Do not look down on slow progress.
If you can pray again, pray. If you can try again, try. If you can apply again, apply. If you can forgive, begin the process. If you can rise, rise slowly but faithfully.
God does not need you to have everything figured out. He only needs your willingness.
Encouragement for Today
God used Moses even though he felt unqualified. God used David even though others overlooked him. God restored Job after great loss. God lifted Joseph from prison to leadership. God strengthened Ruth after grief and uncertainty. God used Esther in a season where courage was required.
The same God is still working today.
He can use your pain for purpose. He can turn your scars into testimony. He can use your weakness to reveal His strength. He can turn your waiting season into preparation. He can open a door that no person can shut.
Do not let excuses become walls around your destiny.
Yes, what happened to you may have been painful. Yes, the delay may have been discouraging. Yes, the rejection may have hurt. Yes, the past may still be heavy.
But God is greater than every excuse, every fear, every mistake, and every limitation.
**Philippians 4:13** says, “I can do all this through him who gives me strength.”
You are not moving forward alone. God is with you. He will help you. He will guide you. He will strengthen you. He will give you wisdom for the next step.
You do not have to see the whole road to take the next step. You only need to trust the One who is leading you.
